Description: Social Media Training is playing a key role in emergency preparedness. This course is designed for members of emergency preparedness and response programs in Western Massachusetts and is designed to help local first responder communities learn the latest techniques for social media use in all phases of emergency management: preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery. Three offerings of the course will be offered. A full day version on Friday, September 21 and two condensed versions, one the evening of Thursday, Sept. 20 and the other the morning of Saturday, September 22. Pre-training materials and information are available at the training blog found at  WesternMassSMEM.wordpress.com. Interested participants are encouraged to follow this blog as online pre-training sessions will be provided here.

Participants: Training is open to WRHSAC constituents, including individuals from each of the 10 DHS  disciplines, within the boundaries of the western region geographical area. If you do not fall into this category, you will be placed on a waiting list. Registration for the course is found here.

Description: The Deerfield Police department, with grant funding from the Western Regional Homeland Security Advisory Council, will be hosting  Officer Down Rescue – Instructor Course, September 12 – 14, 2012  from 0830 – 1630.  The course will be conducted by STS Consulting, www.tactical-ems.com. Lunch will be provided and OEMS credits will be applied for prior to the course.This training will encompass techniques that will enable Law Enforcement Officers to become instructors in Officer Down Rescue &, Self Care and Buddy Aid. Participants will learn techniques such as but not limited to conducting self assessments, hemorrhage control, application of tourniquets, vehicle rescues, ballistic shield rescues, giving medical care behind cover and the use of improvised bandaging techniques. Course participants will conduct these medical drills with, two hands, single hand, vision impaired and in a variety of positions.  Course participants will engage targets down range with their department issue weapons (.40, .45. .223. 5.56 or slugs) from a variety of positions to make the training as realistic as possible.

Participants: This course is open to law enforcement and EMS agencies in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire & Hampden county. Class size is limited to 30 participants.

Description: This course will encompass four topics: Law Enforcement Patrol: Motor Vehicle Hides – Guns, Drugs and Terrorism, Recognition. Prevention, and Management of Excited Delirium and Sudden In-Custody Death, Emerging Gang Culture and New threats in Western MA, and Methamphetamine & Other Emerging Drug Trends.

Participants: This course is open to law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire & Hampden county. Class size is 40 participants.

Description: This exercise will test the emergency dispensing site (EDS) plans of communites in Hampden County.

Social Media for Emergency Management Training

The Western Region Homeland Security Advisory Council is sponsoring a training “Social Media for Emergency Management.” This course will provide participants with practical, hands on experience to incorporate Social Media tools into Emergency Management. The full day course will take place on Friday, September 21, at the Hotel Northampton, Northampton MA. Shorter versions for those who can’t make the full day, will be offered on the evening of Thursday, September 20th & the morning of September 22nd.

A course blog has been established at: WesternMassSMEM.wordpress.com. Individuals planning to attend the course should go to the blog for course registration and to also participate in the training modules that are pre-requisites for the training.
